“The Way” (道 Tao) is a very important concept in Chinese philosophy. Lao Tzu said (in Tao Te Ching): “Ways that can be spoken of are not the eternal way. Names that can be spoken are not eternal names.” Lao Tzu meant that there is an ultimate truth or a supernatural state, which cannot be wholly or fittingly described because of man’s limitations. It expresses that the Tao(道) is the basis of everything yet also surpasses everything; it is not easily understood. Coincidentally, another Scripture, the Bible, also has a close yet more concrete concept of the Tao(道): “In the beginning was the Word (道 Tao), the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

In actuality, the Word/Way (道 Tao) that Lao Tzu was looking for was already clearly shown in the Bible. In the Bible, it explains that Tao(道) is not a type of nothingness or an unreachable state, but it is a God who is real, has a will, and has a personality. The Scripture continues, “All things were made through Him and without Him nothing was made that was made.” (John 1:3). He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth and is the Lord of mankind. He is also the Source of all things. If one wants to find the ultimate truth, he/she must return to the Way (道 Tao) that was here in the beginning.

道 Tao is God and this God who created the heavens and the earth is not distantly lording over all things. He is not a God who is disassociated with the world. God so loved the world that He hopes mankind will come to know him and that through knowing Him, one will find his/her Source and the true meaning of life. Thus the Bible says, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us....full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

The Tao(道) in the Bible is translated from the Greek word “logos”, meaning Word. God expresses His power through his entire creation. God also wants to express His great virtue and love. He could only do so by sending to earth His Son, Jesus Christ, in the likeness of man. He came to earth to be a man once, so that we may be able to see God Himself. At the same time, the Lord Jesus became flesh to achieve a more important purpose, which is to be nailed to the cross as a man, and bear all our sins. “But God demonstrates His own love towards us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). God completed salvation through the sacrifice of His only begotten Son, so that He may speak of His compassion and love through his “Word”.

The Tao(道) in the Bible is real and living; He is mysterious yet intimate . The Lord promised “He who seeks shall find.” May all who seek the Tao(道), will soon be found by the Tao(道).
